Comcast turned regular Wi-Fi into a motion sensor – without a single camera

The American telecommunications and media company Comcast taught home Wi-Fi to notice movement without cameras and individual sensors. The WiFi Motion feature analyzes the changes in the radio signal between the router and the connected devices and alerts the owner to the activity in the house.





Comcast provides home internet, mobile and other consumer services under the Xfinity brand. In August 2026, the company included WiFi Motion in the new Xfinity Shield platform, which combines home network protection, movement detection, and family settings. According to Reuters, the basic features are available to Xfinity Internet customers at no extra cost, and the $15-per-month Shield variant of Shield Select adds a camera, door or window sensor, cloud video storage and 24-hour emergency service. WiFi Motion itself appeared in Xfinity users back in 2025.





WiFi Motion uses radio waves that are already exchanged by Xfinity Gateway and Wi-Fi-connected devices. Human movement changes the radio frequency signal between two points, after which the system captures activity and sends a notification through the Xfinity application. Comcast emphasizes that the feature does not record videos, does not take photos, does not recognize people and does not determine the exact trajectory of the movement. To detect the movement, the Xfinity Gateway can use Xfinity Wi-Fi amplifiers and up to three compatible devices in different parts of the home. The selected gadgets should remain stationary, so thermostats and smart speakers are suitable for the task. Smartphones and other constantly moving devices are not recommended.

The router and the selected device form the detection area that Comcast compares to the elongated oval. The movement within the zone disrupts the wireless signal between the two points and causes the trigger. The areas can be laid through the walls between the rooms. In multi-storey houses, Comcast advises not to place equipment directly above each other, as such a configuration impairs detection.
The company recommends directing areas through corridors and other places where people often pass, and after setting up periodically check the quality of detection. The layout of the room, the position of the network equipment and the surrounding obstacles can influence the result.





The user can choose low, medium or high sensitivity. The maximum sensitivity of Comcast recommends primarily for freestanding private homes. Residents of apartments and houses with common walls are better able to choose less sensitive regimes to reduce the number of false notifications due to the movement of neighbors.





A separate setting allows you to ignore small pets weighing about 18 kg. Pet filtering has an important limitation: the system can stop noticing young children at the same time. WiFi Motion analyzes only changes in the radio signal and does not see who is moving inside the room.





Comcast does not consider WiFi Motion a full security system. The service is not under the supervision of a specialized security service, and the detection of the movement is an additional way to obtain information about the activity of the house. The new Xfinity Shield expands this approach: the free package combines WiFi Motion with the protection of connected devices from malware and phishing, and the paid version adds traditional home security tools.





The confidentiality terms contain an important reservation. Comcast states that WiFi Motion does not track specific people or precise movements, and the company itself does not control the event and notification function created. However, Comcast reserves the right, subject to the law, to transmit the information generated by WiFi Motion to third parties as part of law enforcement investigations, litigation involving the company, a court order, or subpoena. The full list of possible data transmitted and Comcast recipients does not disclose.





The idea to turn Wi-Fi into a motion sensor appeared long before the development of Comcast. Radio signals can be used to determine the presence of people, assess the attendance of premises and analyze activity without the installation of cameras. Similar systems are also used in caregivers, where movement analysis helps to assess daily activity and the risk of falls.





Interest in technology is growing among large home security companies. In February 2026, the American ADT acquired the developer Origin Wireless, working on cameraless movement detection, for $170 million. According to the ADT, Origin’s developments allow you to determine the presence of a person and classify movement without cameras, microphones and wearable devices. ADT plans to begin commercializing new products based on the Origin platform in 2027.





Wi-Fi sensing has already received a separate technical basis in the form of IEEE 802.11bf-2025. IEEE approved the standard on May 28, 2025, and published the final version on September 26. The specification describes Wi-Fi extensions to detect environmental changes using wireless signals in unlicensed bands of 1 to 7.125 GHz and above 45 GHz.





The advent of WiFi Motion shows how the functions of a regular home router gradually go beyond data transmission. The wireless network can already work as an additional sensor of the room, and to detect the movement the owner does not need to install cameras in each room.
